Next to working in news, I enjoy teaching others about media. This past Tuesday, Mario Page and I visited Bryant Primary and Intermediate Schools to talk to students about working in the news business.

We were invited by Mr. Sean Splawski, who teaches the first grade. Though the students were young, they paid attention, and even asked some great questions.

I love the classroom. I got my first taste of the teaching in 2001, when I started working as an adjunct instructor at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa. The experience motivated me to go grad school to get my Masters, which I’m close to completing.

Now, instead of just talking to students about field reporting, and live shots, I also share what I’m learning about blogging, and podcasting.

I told the students that by blogging they can write and report on things going on in their lives, and share their experiences with the world. It is always a great feeling to share a little knowledge.

Actor Idris Elba is among the “ambassadors” partnering with the National Education Association on a new grassroots campaign called “I love my child.”

The program is aimed at strengthening relationships in America’s African, and Caribbean communities.

“In our desire to achieve great public schools for every child, we must make building strong relationships and strategic partnerships with the ethnic minority community a top priority,” says NEA President Reg Weaver. “We recognize the Caribbean and African communities as a significant voice in the national dialogue on education.”

“I think it is very important for us as parents to understand the public school system and know the people that are responsible for teaching our children,” says Elba “A better relationship with the administration will give the student a better future.”

Two websites have been launched to promote the program, ILoveMyCaribbeanChild, and ILoveMyAfricanChild.

Other “ambassadors” include Golden Krush Bakery Founder/CEO Lowell Hawthorne, New York Assemblyman Nick Perry, soca Queen Alison Hinds, Atlanta Falcons’ Ovie Mughelli, Indianapolis Colts’ Joseph Addai, Marlon Hill – The Jamaican Diasopora Southern U.S., VP Records, CT Martin – Atlanta City Council, Commissioner Dale V.C. Holness of Lauderhill, FL, and Senegalese rap group Gokh-Bi System.

Former CNN anchor Bernard Shaw received a special toast at the NABJ convention in Las Vegas last Saturday in recognition of his ”Lifetime Achievement Award.”

The award goes to a print, broadcast, or photojournalist with at least fifteen years in the industry.  Nominees may be living or deceased and must have made an extraodinary contribution to black culture.

Shaw is pictured second to left with CNN Worldwide president Jim Walton, CNN/US president John Klien, Chair of CNN Diversity Council Johnita Due, and past NABJ president Bryan Monroe.  Photo courtesy CNN.

You’ve been sleepin’ if you haven’t seen Kiri Davis’ documentary “A Girl Like Me.”  She’s received plenty of mainstream attention from her video that examines self image issues of black youth.  The video is truly eye opening. ”A Girl Like Me” took top honors in Cosmo Girl’s Take Action Hollywood Film Contest.  Great job Kiri! I didn’t get a chance to consume my normal evening media meal last night, so this morning I was disgustingly surprised to learn that Michael Vick has been indicted on federal charges for dog fighting.  Is it a real shock?  No. But deep down, I was hoping that his name would be cleared.  Of course, he’s innocent until proven guilty, but we all know that a charge by itself is more than enough to ruin the image, and career of a public figure.

Here’s what other bloggers are saying about the latest developments:

The Field Negro

“…if this story with Vick and the dogs is true, he is cooked. America will never forgive him! He would have had a better chance of redemption if he had killed his wife like another famous football player did.”

“Michael Vick is a dumb ass. His brother, more so. They show lack of home training.”

Finally, Atlanta Journal Constitution sports columnist, Mark Bradley’s thoughts:

“An indictment means there’s a case against him. A case means a trial will be scheduled. A trial would mean he could go to jail.

An indictment also means Michael Vick has let a slew of people down. From Arthur Blank, who signed him to a new contract worth $130 million two days before Christmas in 2004; to Bobby Petrino, who came here largely because he wanted to coach him; to the teammates who put their trust in him; to every fan who has bought a No. 7 jersey and worn it with pride … none of those folks can look at Vick today the same way they did yesterday. The dynamics have changed. Reality has changed.”

Did he think that he was above the law, or that he wouldn’t get caught? Perhaps he’s innocent. Dog fighting is such a brutal sport, it’s hard not to get mad.
