R.I.P. John Cater

This is a true shock. Atlanta freelance news reporter John Cater passed away Tuesday morning.

I haven’t learned why or how he died, but this is sad news. Cater worked for several local Atlanta stations.

I last saw and spoke to him a few months ago at the NABJ Conference in Tampa, Florida. Though I didn’t know him well, I’ll remember his wide smile, his positive outlook, and he was a true broadcast professional.

Before moving to Atlanta, he worked at KDKA-TV and WPCW in Pittsburgh.

The AABJ Website has more information, but this really underscores the fact that you never know when your time may be up.

Live each day to the fullest. We’ll miss you John.

Update: LiveApartmentFire has more information about what happened:

“…an unknown illness hospitalized him at Thanksgiving. An infection developed. He never shook it.” Cater was 32.

Even more disturbed by the fact that 11 alive has nothing posted on their website and that they have deactivated his bio.

Didn’t it dawn on anyone over there that they would be looking to 11 alive to get more information about him.

    So disappointed in them.

It looks like the local stations also covered this. Not a lot of info though.

I have known John since he was a very small boy. He and my brother were best friends. I use to let them tag along with me…because I could drive…to Great America, skating, and so much more. I just found out today and I am so sad! My whole family is saddened by this.

After college I moved to Decatur, IL as a reporter and went to work at a tv station – WAND…several years later I was watching the news and John was reporting at the same station. We kept in touch for a very long time.

I will miss him stopping his car in front of my parents house when he would see us outside and just stopping by to tell my parents hi.

He was a really good guy. I have so many fond memories.
