I wanted to pull my teeth out because the senselessness of this article. Then I read Betty's comments and my faith in humanity has been further eroded.

First of all, for DD to ban this ad over a scarf, it has raised itself to the same illogic and ultra-conservatism they originally were trying to distance themselves from.

Second of all, Betty's leap in logic was so great, she would a gold medal in Beijing for the long jump event. A paisley scarf and a swastika are two TOTALLY different things. The latter was a propaganda tool used to symbolize a madman's movement. The paisley design of the scarf is a design of HINDU origin that is worn throughout the region. It's not the same as a black turban or a red swastika (again, both are a symbols used to represent their respective illogical movements). Rachael Ray was wearing a trendy scarf that happened to be black. If it were the 40's and she wore just a red scarf, would she be symbolizing the nazis? It's a color for fashion. Also, ITS RACHEAL RAY.

But what if it were Padma Lakshmi who wore the scarf? Idiots like you would make sure she was burned at the stake.

The paranoia of this country has hit a new high. I weep for the future.

While I agree this is ridiculous because her scarf looks simply like a scarf, I'd like to play the devil's advocate. We must remember symbols have always represented an important part of all cultures throughout time. Had Rachel Ray worn a swastika arm band or white hood the world would have been appalled. I am amazed that certain forms of dress have become en vogue. As an expatriate from the U.S. it disturbs me that we can be so insensitive especially after 911 and I can only attribute this to ignorance. For many of us living elsewhere in the world, we see up close what these symbols represent. These organizations and governments actively support the suppression of women, the banning of freedom of religion and speech, and the tacit acceptance of violence against innocent human beings all in the name of a cause or belief. Have we become so P.C. that we refuse to tell the truth or are we somehow hoping that our own human/democratic values are also shared by all? Read, listen and observe. Actions always speak louder than words. Remember, symbols are powerful messages!

It's unfortunate that we respond to such symbols in such a way. There's nothing exactly hateful or violent about a woman wearing a scarf. There are worse things to worry about than that.
