from Morehouse College press release:

Forty years to the day after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Morehouse College will commemorate the readings and teachings of King with a ground-breaking global conversation. Morehouse is partnering with the Digital Worlds Institute at the University of Florida to engage several experts in conversation across continents — and it will all take place on the Internet.

The conversation, which will be explored during the four Fridays in the month of April, will focus on King’s metaphor of the World House, taken from his book Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? The book was published in 1976 and is a part of the 10,000-piece Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. Collection. The “World House” chapter is based on King’s Nobel Peace Prize lecture, which is also a part of the Collection.

The first of these global conversations will take place on Friday, April 4, at 10 a.m. Morehouse College will serve as the epicenter for this global connection, which will feature speakers and performances from Africa, India, China, Florida and Georgia, hosted by WSB Radio’s Condace Pressley.

The topic for April 4 will focus on King’s challenge to citizens of the world to “transcend tribe, race, class, nation and religion to embrace the vision of a World House.” Featured speakers will include Dr. Walter E. Fluker, executive director of the Leadership Center at Morehouse College and interim director of the King collection, who will be stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, China; Dr. Manisha Shelat, senior lecturer on Journalism and Communications at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in India; Dr. Stephanie Evans, assistant professor in African American Studies and Women’s Studies at the University of Florida in Gainesville; and Benson Wambari, professor in the department of philosophy at Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya. Also expected to participate in this history-making event are spoken word artists, dancers and musicians from the USA to China.

Sources tell my Urban Report that heads rolled Friday morning at WFOR in Miami. WFOR’s Chief Photog Kurt Calhoun, and reporter Evan Bacon could be among those terminated.

… A lot of people.

FOR’s News Director Adrienne Roark apparently survived, but My Urban Report hasn’t been able to confirm the information. Several calls were put into the station for an official word.

Holla at me if you know sum.

My friend and colleague Rod Finch is taking a break from broadcast news. He’s one of the most talented photogs I know. He’s a one-man production house, and can turn a news package in a pinch.

Finch is like a brother to me. He put me on the right track back in my WTVT days. He also helped me start my production company, then known as Visual Eyez Media. We worked on a variety of video projects, and we always got the work done while having a fun.

He left Fox 13 in Tampa to work at WFOR in Miami, but after eight months, he’s decided to move on.

Below is one of the few videos that feature Rod Finch.

Jule McGee is retiring, and I’m sure that there are plenty of TV folks in Tampa saying, “It’s about time.” McGee has been there, seen it, and done-done-it all. He called me “rookie,” from day one, until I left WTVT-TV eight years later.

I’ve seen him roar like a bear, and give grandfatherly hugs. McGee knew I wasn’t the best with station cell phones and pagers, he yelled at me for driving a live truck, but deep down he is a good ‘ole country boy with a big heart.

Looks like his farewell party is being planned.

e-mail from Stephanie Ottjepka

All of you are invited to join Jule on his last day, Tuesday April 22 to Four Green Fields Irish Pub after work. Since you live far away, I doubt you will be able to attend.

If you’d like to make a quick video for Jule for his goodbye tape I will include it. I’d love to get videos by April 1 but will be able to accept them up to April 9th. I think all of you have access to video equipment. I prefer Beta but can take DVD, VHS, and Quicktime files.
Please send them to:

c/o Stephanie Ottjepka
3213 W. Kennedy Blvd.
Tampa, Fl. 33609

If you think you may be in town on the 22nd, please contact me and I will give you all the details of the parties.

If you know anyone else who may want to be included in this feel free to pass it on.
